How To Be A Good Singer

In the world of singing there is a lot of common advice that is thrown around.  Everything from “use your diaphragm” to “put it in your mask” has been repeated and repeated so many times most people who are trying to learn how to be a good singer have no idea where to start.

It is beyond the scope of one post to try to encompass all that goes into good singing, but we can boil it down to some good starting points. We’ll start with a few basic points that will might seem a little bit obvious or trite.  Even though these points might seem a bit obvious it’s important that we cover these right at the beginning.

How To Be A Good Singer

Square one when you’re trying to figure out how to be a good singer is to focus on singing how you speak. Sounds a little counter-intuitive but it’s true. Focusing on singing in the same way that you speak is paramount. Beginning singers especially will do all sorts of crazy things in order to try to get their singing to sound as natural as possible while ignoring the one concept that they should be focusing on the entire time: Sing how you speak.

In the spirit of simplicity we’ll offer one more broad focus for your singing. We’ll delve deeper into different areas of singing and techniques that are better suited to specific areas of singing but for now, the second technique to practice is intonation.

Intonation should almost be square one for somebody who is trying to learn how to be a good singer but we opted to keep it second right behind singing like you speak. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a huge concept. Ear training is a life long pursuit and even the most advanced musicians can perfect their intonation, but at a beginning level just think this: If you’re singing the wrong notes, everything else you’re doing is wrong. It’s like building an entire skyscraper and then finding out you’ve built it on the wrong site. If you don’t sing the right pitches then it won’t matter how much control, dynamics, breath support, etc. that you have.

Keep these two fundamentals in mind as you continue (or begin) your journey of learning how to be a good singer. Getting back to basics is something that every single singer in the world can do from time to time, from somebody performing in front of 20.000 fans to the a cappella group singing on the street corner.
