Can Anyone Learn To Sing?

Can Anyone Learn To SingEverybody knows that in our society there are people who are singers and people who aren’t.  Singing is just something that you’re born with.  You have have to just have a God-given talent for singing.  Right?

NO!

This is one of the biggest myths propagated by our culture today.  It seems to be a very Western idea as well.  Other cultures seem to embrace collectivist musical experiences more than Western culture does.  So the first step to identifying a problem is defining it.  Here it is: ANYBODY CAN SING!  Let’s put this myth to rest once and for all. Nobody would say a young child who has never been taught to play piano won’t ever be able to play piano.  It would be very obvious to anybody that the child simply hasn’t had a lesson.  They might never be a concert pianist, but nobody would doubt their ability to learn to play well with deliberate practice.

It is the same concept with singing.  The difference is, when people ask the question, “Can anyone learn to sing,” it feels personal because your body is the instrument instead of something that is physically separate from you.

So what should you do to go from “tone deaf” to singer? First off, dispel the myth of tone deafness in your mind right now. Some people will start off with an ear that is more attuned to subtleties. That is true. Some people also start off able to swing a golf club better than others. That doesn’t mean that those who aren’t gifted right from the start can’t learn. So your first focus needs to be on training your ear to hear the differences between pitches.

A great exercise to start off with: Sit in front of a piano and randomly reach out and hit two white keys that are one key apart. Play them as many times as you need to simultaneously until you can distinguish two distinct tones. Once you can hear them both, sing them starting with the bottom pitch first. Do this for 15 minutes a day to start off with.

The other area to focus on is vocal control. There are actually muscles and muscular coordinations involved in singing. Learning how to sing properly takes practice. The ironic thing is, you might start off with a bad ear but have great vocal control or vice versa.
